S.H.A.R.E.’s Christmas Campaign a great success
for Cork’s Elderly

Cork’s annual S.H.A.R.E. (Students Harness Aid for the Relief of the Elderly) Christmas campaign was a huge success again this year thanks to the generosity of the Cork people, according to the secondary school organisers.

“S.H.A.R.E. has always been strongly supported by the people of Cork
and we are delighted that this year was no different”

said Kevin Olden, this year’s S.H.A.R.E. Chairperson.

Kevin also told us that although the Christmas appeal is the only fundraising activity carried out by the Charity itself each year to provide housing and services to Cork’s elderly, the students have an ongoing commitment to their elderly friends and visit them weekly in their S.H.A.R.E homes.

The money raised this year will help towards the maintenance, refurbishment and running of over 200 housing units for the elderly of Cork city and an impressive Day Care Centre at Sheare’s Street, Cork, which hosts 16 residential apartments, hairdressing and laundry facilities, as well as chiropody, physiotherapy and a full time nurse in association with the Health Service Executive.  The Centre is also a gathering centre for the elderly where they can enjoy arts and crafts classes, dancing, card games, bingo and much more.

Almost 1,800 fifth-year students from 18 Cork schools were involved in this year’s fast and fundraising drive.  The teenagers continued their large-scale voluntary fundraising for a period of almost two weeks before Christmas through the cold and the rain.
